Paper Size

Zan Image Printer supports many standard paper sizes as well as custom paper sizes. See "General Settings" for instructions on how to set paper sizes. Paper sizes in inches or cm can be found in the list of supported paper sizes.

Custom paper size can be created by completing the following steps:
On Windows XP Professional:
a) Click the Start button
b) Click Printers and Faxes within the Start menu
c) Select Server Properties from the File menu, click Create a new form, type a custom paper name in the Form name text box and enter the desired paper size under Paper size. Click the Save Form button, and the custom paper will be added to the existing paper list.
d) You may need to close and reopen your application for the newly defined custom paper size to take effect.

On Windows 7:
a) Click the Start menu, then Control Panel, and finally View devices and printers.
b) Click a printer in the list (e.g., Zan Image Printer (BW)), then click Print server properties.
c) Click Create a new form, type a custom paper name in the Form name text box and enter the desired paper size under Paper size. Click the Save Form button, and the custom paper will be added to the existing paper list.
d) You may need to close and reopen your application for the newly defined custom paper size to take effect.

Note:
Some applications do not support selecting a custom paper size as the default paper size. For example, if you set a custom paper size as the default paper size, the default paper size may be set back to Letter or A4 when you close and reopen the application. In this case, you have to manually change the default paper size to the custom paper size each time your application is launched.
Some applications (such as Microsoft Word) have their own printer paper size settings. To get more information about how to set the Paper Size in a Microsoft Word Document, consult the Microsoft Word help system or perform a Google search.


The memory required to process an image is directly proportional to the selected paper size, so it is advisable to use a smaller paper size whenever possible.

The generated image dimension in pixels per page can be calculated using the following formula (where * means multiplication, and / means divided by):
width in pixels = paper width in inches * dpi horizontal/scaling horizontal
height in pixels = paper height in inches * dpi vertical/scaling vertical

To simplify the calculations, all of our examples will assume that the Scaling option is not enabled. For the following examples, one issue you need to be wary of is the wrapping of lines. If the chosen paper size is too small, lines wider than the page width can be wrapped to the next line or truncated at the right margin. If this is the case, you need to select the smallest possible paper size that the print job will fit on to remove the wrapping, then apply the Scaling or Cropping option to reduce the output image to the desired pixel dimensions.

For example, if you set Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) as current paper size, and print at 200 x 100 dpi at that page, the generated image dimension per page will be (approximately):
width in pixels = 8.5 inches * 200 dpi = 1700 pixels
height in pixels = 11 inches * 100 dpi = 1100 pixels

Use the formula 1 inch = 2.54 cm to do a similar calculation if the paper size is specified in cm instead.

Images are described by dimensions in pixels, printouts are described in dpi. If you want to set a generated image to desired pixel dimensions, first you need to determine the dpi to be used, and based on the selected dpi, you can obtain the paper size in inches:
paper width in inches = width in pixels / dpi horizontal
paper height in inches = height in pixels / dpi vertical

Based on the calculated paper size, you can search for an approximate match from the available paper size list (Paper sizes in inches or cm can be found in the list of supported paper sizes). If none of the existing paper sizes suits your needs, you may need to create a custom paper size.
For example, if you want to create a 1728 x 1064 pixels image, and using a DPI setting of 200 x 200 dpi, you divide as follows:
paper width in inches = 1728 pixels/200 dpi = 8.64 inches
paper height in inches = 1064 pixels/200 dpi = 5.32 inches

You need a paper size of 8.64 x 5.32 inches. If you cannot find a 8.64 x 5.32 inch paper size from the paper size list, you can create a custom paper size and set it to be the current paper size. However, if the dpi is 100 x 100, the result changes to a 17.28 x 10.64 inch paper size as follows:
paper width in inches = 1728 pixels/100 dpi = 17.28 inches
paper height in inches = 1064 pixels/100 dpi = 10.64 inches

Printing large paper sizes (especially when processing full color images at a high dpi) poses a great challenge for both memory and CPU. The amount of memory required can be calculated as follows:
memory required in bytes = (number of image pixels x bit depth) / 8

Consider printing in full color image (bit depth = 24bits = 3bytes) at 300 x 300 dpi on Letter paper:
memory required in bytes = (8.5 x 300) x (11 x 300) x 3 = 25245000 bytes = 24 MB

24 MB is the amount of memory needed to hold the image data. However, this even doesn't include the extra memory needed to compress and process the image data.

However, if the same image is printed as a monochrome image (bit depth = 1bit = 1/8byte), the result changes to 1 MB (which is much less memory intensive) as follows:
memory required in bytes = (8.5 x 300) x (11 x 300) /8 = 1051875 bytes = 1 MB


Consider another case when printing a full color image (bit depth = 24) at 300 x 300 dpi on A0 paper:
memory required in bytes = (33.11 x 300) x (46.81 x 300) x 3 = 418467357 bytes = 399 MB

If the same image is printed as a monochrome image (bit depth = 1), the result changes to 16.7 MB as follows:
memory required in bytes = (33.11 x 300) x (46.81 x 300) /8 = 17436140 bytes = 16.7 MB

As you can see, the paper size can dramatically impact the amount of memory needed. For this reason, it's important that always use the smallest paper size.
